Types of Spas: Finding the Spa That's Right For You, Part A

Spas cater to people who want to improve their mind, body and spirit – whether they want to lose weight, get in shape, escape from daily stresses, or simply relax with beneficial and pampering treatments. the key word is wellness - an attitude, a goal, and a result of spa going.

In pursuit of wellbeing and luxurious treatments, Americans are visiting spas in increasing numbers. How do you find the spa that's right for you?

The first thing to do is to sort out the different types of spas. (After you've read this, if you're unsure of how to proceed, read our checklist of how to find the right spa for you)

Day Spa: A spa that offers daily treatments and therapies for face, body and skin. Sometimes salon services are offered in addition to such menu offerings as facials, body scrubs and wraps, massage and waxing.

Medi Spa: A medispa, or medical spa, is defined as a spa that operates under a medial director, usually an MD or DO, and often with a dermatological or plastic surgery specialty. Remember to ask if the physician is board certified in their specialty.

In addition to the usual beneficial spa treatments, you might find laser resurfacing, laser hair removal, UV light therapies for skin, and facial injectables like Botox, Restylane and Radiesse.

Resort Spa: A resort spa, often located in a hotel, offers spa treatments and services, often with fitness classes, workout facilities, spa cuisine and more.

Perfect for his/hers getaways - and at most Resort/hotel spas, if she's intent on golf and he's focused on massage, there are facilities to please them both.

spas and Las Vegas - Las Vegas is now turning its attention to developing world class spas with the same gusto it used in attracting superstar chefs for luxe dining experiences in casino hotel dining rooms. How about a little roulette to go with your sybaritic spa treatments?

Destination Spa: Dedicated to the pursuit of wellness, a destination spa is a lifestyle immersion - treatments, exercise, strict spa menu and educational offerings. Some destination spas offer packages, most require minimum commitments of from three to seven days. Today's destination spa is the fat farm of yesterday.
